Hobsons Choice : February 2009

Hobson’s Choice has been a popular comedy for almost a century, spawning a major film in the fifties and becoming a set text for schools. Originally set in a Victorian shoe shop in Salford, this Swan production sees the action move to the early 1960s where its gender politics and generational power struggles take on a new dimension as domineering cobbler Henry Hobson is forced to recognise that his success is based upon the sharp business mind of his eldest daughter and the skilled hands of meek young bootmaker, Willie Mossup.

Behind the laugh out loud comedy of Hobson’s Choice beats a tender heart: as Maggie Hobson manipulates all around her to make her own dreams come true, it becomes clear that those dreams are not all about money, power and success, for the one thing missing most from Maggie’s life... is love.
